If on the one hand we see a displacement of the cities of Puglia, by young graduates (and not), who decide to leave abroad, looking for a “better” future, work opportunities that are more suitable for their studies and probably better paid, on the other hand, we see a constant increase in tourism in the region, which is certainly beneficial for all the structures that over the years are increasing and improving their standards.
It is not a mystery, in fact, that Puglia is one of the most dreamed destinations for tourists from all over the world.
It was just “Lonely Planet” the most sold tourist guide in the world, to put it in second place in the ranking of the best travel destinations for 2014 (Lonely Planet’s best value travel destinations for 2014). But also National Geographic has given to Puglia a place in the ranking of “best trip” for the year 2014.
But what makes Puglia so desirable by tourists from all over the world? … From all over the world?
Yes, of all the world! If initially the tourism economy in Puglia could only count tourists from Germany and some areas of France, it has been for years now that the territories have spread not only to the Center and Northern Europe (Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden and Denmark) but also in America and in Russia. But how to blame this decision by tourists to go so far in Puglia, on what is geographically defined the heel of Italy ?! Impossible to do it!
And it is not only good food that attracts tourists from all over the world, but also the architectural beauties, the history, the Baroque, the particularity of the Apulian countryside, those dry stone walls that were previously used to delimit the territories, those strange pointed buildings made of stone:TRULLI, the prices not too high, the wine and undoubtedly the sea.
-The Puglia is bathed by two seas: the Ionian and the Adriatic and its coasts are both rocky and sandy, so ideal for families with small children, for lovers of the rocks and why not, also for the daring divers. –
As I wrote above, the tourist facilities have been improving their standards for years, but let’s look specifically at what I mean by stating this.
In the 90s tourists (mainly Germans) preferred hotels, tourist villages and above all campsites. In fact in the Salento area there are still many, well-equipped and suitable for all budgets; but the increase in requests has sharpened the talent of the Pugliesi turning those that were real ruins, disused trulli and abandoned farmhouses in real villas to accommodate and satisfy even the most demanding tourists. We are talking about villas, trulli and extra-luxury homes, with swimming pools, equipped with all the comforts to make the stay unique and unforgettable. Creating a proper business.
Competition in this sector is really high and owners never let their guard down, on the contrary they update and improve from year to year.
After all if in the ranking “TRIPADVISOR SUMMER VACATION VALUE REPORT 2017”, the Puglia locations are even 3: Gallipoli at the 1st place, Polignano a Mare at the 6th place and Lecce at the 9th place, and also in the BIT (International Tursimo Exchange) Puglia, specifically the Salento, won the top positions, we owe it to all these factors that together make it one of the most beautiful regions in the world.
These awards make the Apulians, proud of their land, their products and their localities that are finally reevaluated as it should be. And all this does nothing but encourage them and motivate them to do even better, so that the local economy (mainly based on tourism) can be continuously growing and make sure that the many young people “forced” to emigrate to look for a job, can return to their beloved land, rich with sun, sea and good food.
